Pakistan packaging giant invests in high-tech sheetfed offset technology from KBAFirst highly automated Rapida 106 with double coating and cold foil for Saima Packaging Pvt Ltd

In January 2016 KBA-Sheetfed will be delivering a seven-colour Rapida 106 raised press with double coating for both UV & Conventional Printing on board and plastics, and a cold-foil transfer system to Saima Packaging Pvt Ltd in Karachi/Pakistan. The company, founded by Muhammad Yousuf Tinwala, today is one of the country's largest producers of high-quality packaging.

When Muhammad Yousuf Tinwala first set up his business in 1972 it operated from a shop measuring just 4m². Printing became his principal occupation in 1975 and the past 40 years have seen the company grow into a major player with over 250,000ft² of production floor space. Saima currently has more than 450 employees and there is still no end in sight to the growth. The company processes some 21,000 tonnes of board and flexible substrates every year. Saima is a top supplier for many well-known brand names, and market leader in packaging for the tobacco, food and beverages, FMCG and pharmaceuticals industries in Pakistan.

Ideal press for special packaging

A Rapida 105universal with five printing units with coater and hybrid equipment has already been in operation at Saima Packaging for the past two years. The reliability and flexibility of the press, paired with the intensive support given by the KBA team both during the investment phase and in after-sales service, have delighted all concerned, and it was not least for this reason that Muhammad Yousuf Tinwala recently signed for an 18,000-sph high-tech Rapida 106 with 11 printing and finishing units. It is also the first press with inline cold-foil transfer in Pakistan. Further equipment highlights include FAPC fully automatic plate changers, CleanTronic Multi combi-washing system, CleanTronic UV, EES extraction in the delivery and lot more. The two intermediate drying units are configured with VariDry IR/hot-air dryers, followed up with VariDry IR/hot-air/UV dryers for final drying in the triple-extended delivery. The DriveTronic feeder with dedicated drives, DriveTronic SIS sidelay-free infeed, disengaging of the unused inking units, an ErgoTronic console with wallscreen and the new TouchTronic operating concept are already standard features of the press. The presetting data for fast job changeovers are supplied to the press via LogoTronic CIPLinkX. For Saima the new press is key to short makeready, high productivity in inline finishing and reduced energy consumption.

Saima Packaging produces both rigid and flexible packaging on eight sheetfed offset and two rotogravure presses. The substrates used range from paper to polypropylene & polyethylene and run lengths vary between 200 and 1.5 million sheets. In sheetfed offset, the company offers its clients the desired added value in the form of a broad colour spectrum and an endless diversity of finishing options. Its clients include big brand names, such as Philip Morris, Abbott Laboratories, Unilever and McDonalds. Water-based coatings (matt and gloss), UV coatings (matt and gloss), printing and finishing on metallised board, embossing, window cut-outs and additional security features are daily business for Saima. And the new Rapida 106, with its seven printing units, twin coaters and cold foil transfer, is the ideal press for innovations.
